A chalazion, often mistaken for a sty, is a pea-sized lump that appears in one or both eyelids and is caused by inflammation of an oil gland within the skin of the eyelid. Typically, the pimple-like bump can act like a sty for the first few days, but after that it can grow for several days or weeks and can be hard, red, warm, or painful.

Chalazion Treatment in Orange County

Although chalazions may heal by themselves, a hot compress should be applied to the irritated eye for 10 to 15 minutes at a time. A slightly irritated chalazion can be treated with antibiotics or other medications. Individuals with chalazions should never attempt to pop or rupture the bump for risk of infection to the eye. Chalazions that persist may have to be drained by an eye care professional or injected with medication to promote healing.
