Corneal Abrasions

The clear, outer window of the eye is called the cornea, and a corneal abrasion is a scratch in the epithelium, the thin, outer layer of the cornea. While most corneal abrasions heal in a short time, sometimes within hours, deeper or larger scratches may take up to a week to heal. Unfortunately, because the cornea has a tremendous number of nerve endings, any damage to the cornea can be very painful.

When there is a break or defect in the epithelium and damage to the underlying material called the stroma, microorganisms can reach the area under the cornea and a corneal ulcer can result.

Corneal Ulcers

Corneal ulcers generally heal well if treated early and aggressively. However, if neglected, they can lead to corneal clouding, scarring and even perforation, resulting in a serious loss of vision and possibly loss of the eye. Therefore, corneal ulcers should be treated as a serious, vision-threatening condition requiring prompt medical attention. If you believe you have a corneal ulcer, please contact Clarity Eye Group today.
