Also called "drooping eyelid," ptosis occurs when the muscle responsible for raising the eyelid is no longer strong enough to do so. The condition, which generally appears in old age but can also result from diabetes, brain tumor, stroke, or accident, can affect one or both eyelids and worsen or improve over time. The condition may also be hereditary and can be present at birth (congenital ptosis).
