Entropion is a condition in which a section of the eyelid folds in toward the eye, while ectropion occurs when a portion of the eyelid folds out away from the eyeball. Both conditions are caused when the tissue in and around the eyelid relaxes, which is primarily the result of aging.
In entropion, eyelashes begin to rub against the eyeball and can lead to tears in the cornea, corneal ulcers, and scarring. Entropion surgery is most often required to correct the condition.
In ectropion, in which a portion of the eyelid folds and falls away from the eyeball, common symptoms include tearing of the eyelid skin and dry eyes, since the eyelid may no longer be able to adequately moisturize the eye. Dry eyes can be treated with artificial tears while surgery may be required to correct the sagging skin.
