Phakic IOLs: What Are They?

Phakic intraocular lenses are implantable contact lenses that are similar to the IOLs Clarity Eye Group’s surgeons use when performing cataract surgery in Orange County. However, instead of replacing the patient’s natural crystalline lens, a phakic IOL is placed in front of the natural lens and works with it to improve vision. Phakic IOLs provide a safe and effective alternative for those who are not good candidates for LASIK surgery because they have a high degree of nearsightedness or farsightedness. There are currently two types of phakic intraocular lenses approved by the FDA: Visian ICLs and Verisyse phakic IOLs.
