Welcome to Clarity Eye Group
Rosacea is an inflammatory skin disease that causes facial redness. The disease affects mostly adults, usually those with fair skin, between ages 30 and 60 and is cyclic, meaning it may flare up for periods of time. Because it results in small, red bumps on the face, it is sometimes called "adult acne" and mistaken for the less serious facial skin condition. However, while it is not life-threatening, rosacea can become increasingly worse if left untreated, especially for the eyes. Rosacea can cause red bumps to develop on the eyelids, as well as make the eyes experience redness, dryness, grittiness, and a burning sensation. Rosacea can also cause blepharitis, crustiness of the eyelids, and even corneal ulcers. If ocular rosacea is left untreated, it may lead to blindness.
Treatment of Rosacea
Once rosacea is diagnosed, it can easily be treated. The eyes should be cleansed thoroughly with a solution recommended by an eye doctor. An eye doctor can also prescribe antibiotics or artificial tears to help treat infections or alleviate dryness in the eye. Tear duct plugs may also be recommended to help keep the eyes lubricated. Contact our practice today to learn more about how rosacea can affect the eyes and how the condition can be treated.
