Strabismus is a disorder that causes one eye to be misaligned with the other when focusing. Due to a lack of coordination between the eyes, they are unable to look in a single direction and therefore cannot properly focus. The cause of strabismus, which is commonly referred to as cross-eyed, wall-eyed, or squinty, is largely unknown.
Strabismus is particularly problematic in children, because if the eyes fail to focus on the same image for a period of time, the brain may learn to ignore the input from one eye in order to properly focus. If that is allowed to continue, the eye that is ignored by the brain will never see well, resulting in a loss of vision called amblyopia. When the eye coordination problem is present at or shortly after birth, the condition is called congenital strabismus.
