Pink eye occurs when the thin, transparent tissue covering the white part of the eye becomes inflamed. The cause of that inflammation determines how contagious it is and how it should be treated.

At Clarity Eye Group, our experienced eye doctors diagnose and treat all types of pink eye using advanced, evidence-based care. Because this condition, also known as conjunctivitis, can spread quickly in schools, workplaces, and homes, understanding when it’s contagious (and when it isn’t) is key to protecting both your eyes and those around you.

Types of Pink Eye

  • Viral conjunctivitis – This common form, caused by viruses that also lead to colds or respiratory infections, is highly contagious. It often begins in one eye and spreads to the other.
  • Bacterial conjunctivitis – Caused by bacteria such as Staphylococcus or Streptococcus, this form produces thick discharge and can easily spread through direct contact.
  • Allergic conjunctivitis – Triggered by allergens like pollen, dust, or pet dander, this type is not contagious and often affects both eyes at once.
  • Irritant conjunctivitis – Caused by chemical exposure, smoke, or chlorine, this form is also noninfectious and clears when the irritant is removed.

How Long Does Pink Eye Stay Contagious?

Viral and bacterial conjunctivitis remain contagious for as long as symptoms persist. Viral pink eye can remain contagious for 7 to 14 days, while bacterial infections typically become non-contagious 24 to 48 hours after antibiotic treatment begins. During this time, frequent handwashing, avoiding shared towels or makeup, and not rubbing the eyes can significantly reduce transmission.

When It’s Safe to Return to Work or School

Most people can return to normal activities once discharge, swelling, and redness have resolved. For bacterial pink eye, this is usually after a full day of antibiotic use. Viral conjunctivitis may take several days longer. Your eye doctor can confirm when it’s safe to resume close contact with others.
